International cooperation - COST action CA 18220 - European Network of FURan based chemicals and materials FOR Sustainable development (FUR4Sustain). (European Network for Furan Chemicals and Materials, for Sustainable Development).

The purpose of the campaign is to develop the participation of researchers, both from academic institutions and industry, in the development of chemicals and polymers based on the decomposition products of cellulose, especially furan derivatives. The emphasis is on the synthesis of furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), which is the basis for the synthesis of polyethylene furanoate (PEF), which is a furan analogue of PET but has several advantages over PET. It is 100% biopolymer, has better barrier properties (6x lower oxygen permeability), higher glass transition temperature (85 ° C), lower melting point (210 ° C) and 60% higher elastic modulus than PET.

As part of the project, we intend to work in the field of synthesis of other polymers based on 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, which is one of the starting materials for the synthesis of FDCA, as well as other potential monomers and polymers.
