Polymer Evening FTPO

Our next Polymer Evening will take place on Wednesday, January 8th, 2020 at 6.30 pm. Dr.-Ing. Tobias Beiß, Head of Innovation BU Plastic Systems, Bielomatik Leuze GmbH + Co. KG, Germany, will present the topic "Process selection for plastic welding".

The lecture is, as usual, free for all participants. Presentation will be in English language.

Summary of the lecture

In the past, plastics have achieved great success as materials in many applications. This is primarily due to the great variability of plastics, which can be tailor-made for numerous applications. These include, among other things, simple coloring and versatile mechanical, haptic and other properties that can be adapted using fillers and additives. In addition, plastics have the advantage that components can be made from them in very few steps at low temperatures. This is an important economic factor for industrial mass production. The plastic process chain has a clear advantage over other materials in terms of cost. Frequently, components, e.g. hollow bodies, cannot be produced in one manufacturing step. In the case of functional assemblies or hollow bodies (containers, pipes), joining techniques such as plastic welding must be used to assemble several semi-finished products into the final assembly.

When plastics are welded, two joining partners in the welding area are converted into a molten state by the supply of energy (heating) and joined under pressure. The thermoplastic solidifies by cooling and the material joint is produced. In terms of heating, there are a number of energy supply options for melting the plastic. These range from heat conduction with the aid of a hot, metallic tool (heating element) to non-contact radiation or convection heating and friction-based processes.

About the lecturer

Tobias Beiß studied mechanical engineering at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 2004 to 2009 he was a research assistant at the Chair of Plastics Technology under Prof. Ehrenstein and Prof. Schmachtenberg. After his dissertation with the title “Vibration joining of fiber reinforced thermosets by abrasive nylon6 based hot melts” he moved to Bielomatik Leuze GmbH + Co KG as Head of Innovation Management in the Business Unit Plastic Systems. There he is responsible for application consulting for plastic welding processes, product development and business field development.

Tobias is Member of several technical guideline working groups of the German welding society (DVS), member of the board of the DVS-journal “Joining Plastics / Fügen von Kunststoffen”.
